Genk Faces Setback in Pursuit of Striker Roberto Fernandez as Atletico Madrid Wins Battle

KRC Genk will return to the training field for the first time on Monday. That will certainly be with new trainer Thorsten Fink and Jarne Steuckers. However, there are many other signings in the pipeline at Genk, which is heading for a busy transfer summer.

In principle, the arrival of Matte Smets must also be officialized quickly, but even then Genk will not be ready yet. The Limburgers’ next priority seems to be attracting at least one new striker. Two names for this have emerged in recent weeks.

Genk arrives too late for Fernandez

On the one hand, Genk reported to Celtic for the arrival of Oh Hyeon-gyu. After seeing an initial offer rejected, they reportedly submitted an improved offer for the South Korean a few days ago. His arrival therefore remains on the agenda.

Roberto Fernandez’s seems to have to be deleted. Genk also wanted the 21-year-old striker, who was very successful at Malaga last season. There he scored 20 times in 39 games in the Spanish third division.

Atletico Madrid wins the battle

But Genk already seems to arrive too late for the Spanish goalkeeper. After all, according to journalist Angel Garcia, it is Atletico Madrid that will run with Fernandez. The youngster would sign a five-season contract with the club of Axel Witsel and Arthur Vermeeren.

At Atletico, Fernandez will not immediately join the first team. He will probably be stationed with the B team, although it is also possible that he will stay in Malaga for another year. That would only happen if the team wins promotion to LaLiga2 on Saturday.
