Gennaro Gattuso Signs with Hajduk Split: Reviving His Career in Croatia

Dismissed by OM in mid-February, Gennaro Gattuso had touches in Saudi Arabia, but it is ultimately in Croatia that he will try to revive. He signed up with Hajduk Split.

This is not necessarily where he was expected. While he was announced to be in contact with Saudi clubs, Gennaro Gattuso finally decided to relaunch… in Croatia. Free since the end of his adventure in Marseille in mid-February, the 46-year-old Italian technician has signed up until 2026 with Hajduk Split. His presentation is scheduled for next week.

“Thanks to his style of play, his combativeness, his intransigence and his winning mentality, he has become an emblematic figure in world football. He has worked in clubs known to be extremely demanding and has always proven, during his career as a player and a coach, who knew how to resist pressure and high expectations,” his new club said in a press release.

Croatian champions six times in their history, the last time in 2005, Hajduk Split settled for third place last season behind Dinamo Zagreb and Rijeka. Gattuso will notably have under his command Yassine Benrahou, former midfielder for Girondins de Bordeaux and Nîmes Olympique, and Croatian international Ivan Perisic, summoned for the Euro in Germany.

Gattuso arrived at the helm of OM at the end of September 2023, replacing the Spaniard Marcelino, who left after seven matches. Despite an encouraging start, the 2006 world champion was unable to turn things around. “In the current dynamic of results, we had to make decisions. We had to change the dynamic,” President Pablo Longoria justified himself when announcing his departure.
