German Athletics Championships in Braunschweig: Klein and Bremm win over 5,000 m

Status: 28.06.2024 21:29

Hanna Klein and Florian Bremm won the 5,000 m title at the start of the German Athletics Championships in Braunschweig on Friday. ARD will also be broadcasting the event on TV on Saturday and will be broadcasting it live from 12 noon.

Klein, who started as the favorite after Konstanze Klosterhalfen withdrew, put in an impressive performance and is in top form for Paris. With a time of 15:11.83 minutes, she missed the Olympic standard (14:52.00), but she will secure her ticket for the Summer Games through her position in the world rankings.

The sixth-placed team at the European Championships did not play around in front of the atmospheric backdrop of the Eintracht Stadium, but set a surprisingly high tempo from the start. Only her Tübingen teammate Eva Dieterich and Svenja Pingpank (Hannover) were able to keep up, at least at the beginning. Dieterich even took over some of the leadership work, “we had a little team tactic,” revealed Klein, who was happy about the support: “Teamwork pays off.”

While the European indoor champion over 3,000 m ran like clockwork and after a solo run over the final three kilometers to her ninth national title over 5,000 m, Dieterich followed in her wake and finished second in a personal best time (15:30.28) ahead of Pingpank (16:05.03).

Parsons stopped two laps before the end

In the men’s race, Florian Bremm (Höchstadt/Aisch) successfully defended his title in 13:38.43 minutes. Sam Parsons had been storming ahead for a long time, but Bremm remained in wait and overtook him two laps before the end when the Berliner ran out of energy. The 30-year-old ultimately finished fourth (13:44.89). Silver went to the Wattenscheid 10,000 m specialist Nils Voigt (13:41.21), bronze to Aaron Bienenfeld (Hanau-Rodenbach/13:41.89). The German best of the year and co-favorite Maximilian Thorwirth (Düsseldorf) dropped out early in the race due to injury.

Good atmosphere at the start of the title fights

The Eintracht Stadium was packed for the start of the championships on Hamburger Strasse early on Friday evening. Before the main competition days on Saturday and Sunday, spectators had free entry. “The atmosphere really helped. I’m glad that the stadium was opened and the spectators were allowed to get close to the track,” said Klein, adding contentedly at the ARD microphone: “I’ve had the feeling throughout the season that my recovery was good. Running a 15:11 on my own shows that I’m at a pretty good level.”

In addition to Klosterhalfen, who had to forego her start in Braunschweig due to the effects of a viral infection, as she did at the European Championships in Rome, and will therefore most likely miss the Olympics, defending champion Lea Meyer was also absent. The Leverkusen native is concentrating on her performance in her favorite discipline, the 3000 m steeplechase.

Last exit to Paris

In Braunschweig, 18 German championship titles will be awarded for women and men by Sunday. Some athletes are also fighting for their last chance at the Olympics. The qualification period ends on June 30. In addition to Klosterhalfen, another figurehead is missing: Olympic long jump champion Malaika Mihambo (consequences of a corona infection).
