German basketball fans are happy! On the second day of the NBA Draft, another player from Germany will be selected.

The last pick in the NBA draft was a special affair from a German perspective. The Dallas Mavericks drafted the German center Ariel Hukporti at position 58, but immediately traded him to the New York Knicks for Isaiah Hartenstein.

After Tristan Da Silva, who was selected in the first round by the Orlando Magic, Hukporti is the second German to be considered in this year’s talent draw. He is also the first player of Togolese descent to make it into the best basketball league in the world.

Hukporti, born in Stralsund, has an impressive physical presence and has already gained plenty of experience at the professional level. His basketball career began in Germany in 2018 with the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, for whom he played in the BBL until 2020.

After a stint in Lithuania, Hukporti came to Australia to join Melbourne United, where he played 55 games last season and averaged 8.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. In February 2024, he finally returned to his old stomping ground in Ludwigsburg.
