The 0-0 draw against Ukraine did not trigger any real European Championship euphoria. National coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) explained after the game: “Of course we would have preferred to win 2-0 or 3-0, but I think we played a good game for long stretches.”

Nagelsmann further revealed after the match: “I just told the team that the most important indicator for me is: Do you get the impression that the team wants to win? I do get the impression that we wanted to win, absolutely.”

But is that enough? Veteran Thomas Müller (34) is annoyed about the poor utilization of opportunities. Müller: “It’s a shame that we didn’t score. […] We deserved the goal, it wasn’t that we wasted chances carelessly, but sometimes there are days like that.”

A ray of hope against Ukraine: Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (38) celebrated his comeback in the national team. After breaking his tibia and fibula in December 2022, Neuer was out for a long time. Most recently, he was suffering from a small muscle injury, and last week he also caught a gastrointestinal infection.

The 38-year-old said of his comeback: “It’s a wonderful feeling, I’m happy to be back with the national team. I missed it. Unfortunately, we didn’t reward ourselves for the many scoring opportunities. I hope that things will be different in the group phase.”

Before the group phase of the European Championship begins, there is still a friendly match against Greece. In Mönchengladbach, the DFB team will have the chance to do better.
