German Players Fall in Tennis Tournament Quarterfinals: No Local Representation in Bad Homburg

The quarterfinals of the tennis tournament in Bad Homburg will take place without German participation. As the last local player, Jule Niemeier lost in the round of 16 to the favored Spaniard Paula Badosa 6:4, 2:6, 1:6 after a good start.

Niemeier had actually already been eliminated in the qualification, but then moved into the main field as a so-called lucky loser after another player withdrew.

There, the former Wimbledon quarterfinalist had knocked top-seeded Greek Maria Sakkari out of the tournament in the opening match.

A few hours before Niemeier’s elimination in the round of 16, 15-year-old Julia Stusek was eliminated in the first round.

Stusek lost to Peyton Stearns from the USA 2:6, 5:7. For the young German, it was the first match in a main draw on the WTA tour. The world number 913 had slipped into the main draw as a lucky loser, just like Niemeier.

Kerber out earlier

Previously, three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber, former Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria and Tamara Korpatsch had also failed in the first round.

The tournament in Hesse serves as preparation for the grass court classic in Wimbledon. The Grand Slam event begins on Monday.
