German Tennis Rising: Young Stars Shine in Semifinals at Smaller Tournaments

While the German women’s tennis elite didn’t see any land at the domestic grass tournament in Bad Homburg, just like the men did in Mallorca or Eastbourne, the second and third guard of the DTB are celebrating an almost outstanding week. At smaller tournaments, there have only been a few semi-final appearances so far.

Ten German tennis players have already reached the semi-finals in the singles competitions this week, in what are admittedly rather small tournaments. It is also already clear that three German talents will definitely reach the final.

What is particularly pleasing is that some fairly new names are also shaking up the scene.

Particularly noteworthy is Eva Bennemann, who is just 16 years old and has been causing one surprise after another at the W15 event in Kamen.

Bennemann, who has not yet scored any points in the WTA world rankings, won against German competitors Franziska Sziedat (number 880 in the world rankings), Joelle Steur (number 676 in the world rankings) and Paula Rumpf (no world ranking points) and is now in the semifinals. Luisa Meyer auf der Heide (number 799 in the world rankings) is another DTB player waiting there. There will definitely be a German finalist in Kamen.

German final in Kamen and Alkmaar possible

But that’s not all: Top seed Julia Middendorf (number 403 in the world rankings) could even make it to a German final. However, the 21-year-old must win her semi-final against Dutchwoman Stephanie Visscher (number 661 in the world rankings).

The situation is very similar for the men, who are competing in Kamen at the same time: Here, on Saturday, 20-year-old Liam Gavrielides (number 613 in the world rankings) and 18-year-old Mariano Dedura-Palomero (number 1588 in the world rankings) will duel in an all-German match for a place in the final.

Top talent Diego Dedura-Palomero (number 1059 in the world rankings) also has a chance of reaching the final. The 16-year-old will face Russian Svyatoslav Giulin (number 426 in the world rankings).

Further German chances of reaching the final exist in Klosters (M15/Switzerland), where Patrick Zahraj (number 752 in the world rankings) challenges Benjamin Lock from Zimbabwe (number 270 in the world rankings), as well as at the same tournament in the women’s competition: Here Anna Vecic (number 559 in the world rankings) will face the Swiss Jenny Dürst (number 495 in the world rankings).

The prospects are even better at the W15 tournament in Alkmaar (Netherlands). There, three German players, Angelina Wirges (number 603 in the world rankings), Selina Dal (number 665 in the world rankings) and Fabienne Gettwart (number 542 in the world rankings), are in the semifinals.
