Germany’s Summer Fairytale Continues: Quarter-Finals Victory and VAR Drama

Our summer fairytale dream continues!

The DFB team is in the quarter-finals of the European Championship, winning against the Danes 2-0. It is our first victory in a knockout match since the quarter-finals of the 2016 European Championship.

But this round of 16 was a summer storm fairytale – with a lot of VAR luck!

48th minute: Defender Andersen pushes the ball over the line from close range to give Denmark the lead. But because former BVB star Delaney was just millimetres offside, the video referee disallows the goal – lucky for Germany.

Just three minutes later, the Danish hero became the tragic figure of the game. A cross from space hit Andersen’s hand. Referee Oliver looked at the scene and pointed to the penalty spot. Havertz stayed cool and scored from the penalty spot – 1:0 (54′).

BamS referee Thorsten Kinhöfer: “Those three minutes were bitter for the Danes, but technically everything was in order. Offside was correct – albeit a very slight one. And the handball was undisputed. The arm is out, the ball clearly hits the thumb.”

Thanks to these wild minutes and a little luck, our boys made it to the quarter-finals of the European Championship. But things could have been so much easier for the DFB team.

After the group matches with the same starting line-up, Nagelsmann makes three changes. Schlotterbeck replaces Tah (yellow card suspension), Raum plays for Mittelstädt.

The biggest surprise: young star Florian Wirtz (always in the starting eleven) is only sitting on the bench, but Leroy Sané is allowed to play from the start for the first time.

Nagelsmann on ZDF: “We didn’t sprint or offer enough depth against Switzerland. Leroy is a player who embodies both very well. Leroy has trained very well. We are deciding between two world-class players.”

And: Contrary to expectations, Havertz is starting as a striker instead of Füllkrug, as he did recently. In the end, the national coach had a golden touch.

Nagelsmann: “Fülle would also have deserved to start. But we have a clear idea of starting with Kai because I don’t think we’ll have air supremacy right from the start. We’ll need Fülle with his emotionality over the course of the game.”

A huge party is already underway long before kick-off, with 20,000 fans parading through the city. And on the pitch, our boys are setting off a fireworks display (of chances).

First, referee Oliver blew the whistle to disallow Schlotterbeck’s supposed lead because of a Kimmich block (4th). Kinhöfer: “Clear foul by Kimmich! Spotted very well live by the referee.”

Then Schlotterbeck (7th), Kimmich (7th) and Havertz (10th) despaired at the outstanding Danish goalkeeper Schmeichel. Bad memories were awakened: in the 0-2 European Championship final in 1992, Kasper’s father Peter Schmeichel bewitched the DFB stars with incredible saves.

And his son does his father proud. Even after the 25-minute break in play due to the thunderstorm, he saves with a strong reflex save against Havertz (37′).

Shortly before the break, the Danes again, Höjlund hits the ball after Schlotterbeck-Bock into the side netting (42nd), Neuer saves in dire need against the striker (45th).

After the break and the crazy VAR minutes, Musiala, who received a standing ovation when he was substituted, finally put the lid on it with the 2-0 (68th) and lets us continue to dream of the first European Championship title since 1996.

The fans in the stands are already singing: “Berlin, Berlin, we’re going to Berlin.”

But: In the quarter-finals next Friday (5 July, 6 p.m.) we are now facing a real cracker against title favorites Spain, should they win against Georgia on Sunday (9 p.m.).
