Gia Linh Phuong’s Surprising Success at the Sakura Cup: What Led to Her Winning Debut?

Aurich – The judoka of TuS Aurich-Ost presented themselves in good form at the traditional Sakura Cup in Südbrookmerland. The Aurich juniors recorded numerous tournament victories and other top placings. Gia Linh Phuong celebrated a promising debut, winning at lightning speed.

Around 80 competitors competed. Some clubs traveled up to 150 kilometers to take part in the event. The fights took place on three mats.

The youngest (up to six years old) competed against each other on a soft mat. Arwed Schwiertz competed for TuS Aurich-Ost. The six-year-old proved his skills and was able to call a trophy and a certificate his own at the end of this category.

Marie Birkel started as a 17-year-old in the adult category because there were not enough participants in her class. She grabbed her opponents with a firm grip and brought them to the ground with a body throw. On the ground, she used the hold she had practiced repeatedly in competition training in combination with a leg extension lever. This tactic earned her first place.

Emily Gerdes also clearly prevailed in her fights before the final was a purely Aurich final. Here, her club colleague Selina Schreder had the upper hand and secured the tournament victory.

Merle Gerdes, who had clearly gained more self-confidence in the execution of her techniques, confidently fought her way to first place in the girls’ youth class.

Gia Linh Phuong, who was taking part in a tournament for the first time, caused a big surprise. Despite her inexperience, she was clearly technically superior to her opponents and countered them. On the ground, she switched to ground fighting mode in a flash. Gia Linh Phuong was able to take home the winner’s trophy beaming with joy.

Gero Schwiertz was the favorite in the eight-year-old class. Schwiertz proved to be too fast and clearly superior. He didn’t lose a fight and also ended up at the top of the podium.

Selina Schreder competed in the eight-year-old girls’ category. She achieved a good third place in her debut. Viljo Braun followed suit, also being awarded bronze in his debut.

Lias Gerdes showed himself to be more experienced in his fights. He took second place. Lias Gerdes made it to the final, but lost by just two points. Nala Willms was initially reserved as a newcomer. However, as the tournament progressed, she improved and started attacking more and more. This earned her third place in the final standings.
