GRAVELLINA – RURAL ROADS: HERE ARE THE ROUTES

In technical jargon, the correct term is “trace”. But, in this case, it is right to use the word “path”. Yes, because there is the track to follow and much more: the landscape that tells of traditions and hard work, but also of excellent fruits, the mountains that are the Alps (and the climbs remind us of this); then there are the villages with noble palaces and peasant houses, squares and fountains of fresh water, and the people, the Valtellinesi, who add joy and anecdotes (because there is always a story to share).

This will be cycling at “Gravellina – Strade Rurali” on 21-22 September 2024. The new non-competitive cycling event in the province of Sondrio was presented on Thursday 27 June at the “Le Volte” Center in Sondrio.

“Bike, Alpine territory and rurality. These are the elements of Gravellina, an event that aims to promote the middle and lower Valtellina, its culture and its food and wine. – explained the organizer Camillo Bertolini of Days Off – Those who come here will cross vineyards, apple orchards, fields of rye and buckwheat, ancient villages, monumental churches, castles, panoramic roads. The novelty is that all these elements are organized into itineraries. You will travel along the “rural roads” that are used today as hundreds of years ago as service roads for local agriculture, but that today we can also use from a tourism point of view”.

The first edition of “Gravellina – Strade Rurali” is a weekend bike ride on three routes of varying difficulty and mileage. The routes are designed from Ardenno to Villa di Tirano, with the center in Sondrio and the starting/finishing point at Parco Adda-Mallero Bartesaghi. “1/2 Gravellina – Est” is the tour from Sondrio to Villa di Tirano (75 km, d+ 1,900 m): a non-trivial tour, with technical sections and Alpine climbs, but the views are worth every drop of sweat. “1/2 Gravellina – Ovest” is 55 kilometers and 950 meters of altitude difference, from Sondrio to Ardenno. It is the discovery of a wilder and perhaps even more rural Valtellina, with a beautiful stretch along the Adda river. “1/4 Gravellina” is the short tour (35 km, elevation gain 800 m) but full of beauty and super-spots, such as the bridge over the Cassandre suspended almost 100 metres above the Mallero torrent, and is a great adventure even for beginners.

“Gravellina” with the collaboration of Bikebernina also has “e-Bike in the Vineyard” planned: an easy guided tour on the terraces of Sondrio, with refreshment in the vineyard, for a good Sunday.

The heart of “Gravellina – Strade Rurali” will be Parco Adda-Mallero Bartesaghi in Sondrio, a green and cool area on the banks of the Adda river, with activities open to all: refreshments, partner area, bike routes for the little ones, live music and – on Sunday – the Campagna Amica market, a great partnership as confirmed by the Director of Coldiretti Sondrio, Giancarlo Virgilio, present in the room.
