Gregoria Mariska Tunjung surrendered two straight games 8-21, 18-21 to Wang Zhi Yi in the quarter-final duel of the Indonesia Open 2024. Gone are the host’s representatives in the women’s singles.
Playing at Istora Gelora Bung Karno, Friday (7/6), Gregoria had difficulty facing Wang in the first game. Wang even managed to score eight points to close the interval with a score of 11-2. After the break, the situation did not change much.
Gregoria slowly gained points one by one, but Wang was too far away. He could only get six points before Wang closed the first game with a score of 21-8 in about 15 minutes.
In the second game, Gregoria gave Wang more resistance. The two players had time to chase each other’s points up to 7-7, before Wang pulled away again with a score of 11-8 at the interval.
After the break, Wang got further away to lead 16-12. Wang’s smash in front of the net that grabbed Gregoria’s charge changed the score to 17-12. A shot by Wang to the edge of the field that Gregoria failed to reach gave extra points for Wang, 18-12.
Gregoria tried to get up. He added two points to 14-18 after twice sending punches into areas that Wang couldn’t reach. However, Wang’s attack which ended in a smash failed to be blocked by Gregoria, making the score 19-14.
Two consecutive shots from Wang that went off the court and one shot that hit the net gave Gregoria three additional points to make it 17-19. Gregoria’s cross smash which Wang failed to return made the score 18-19. Hope appears again.
However, Wang managed to suppress it. He was able to appear calm and got the 20th point through a drop shot which Gregoria was unable to respond to. Furthermore, Gregoria’s shot which came out of the playing area ensured that Wang won 21-18.
With this result, there are no longer any representatives from Indonesia in the women’s singles. Previously, Putri Kusuma Wardani had been eliminated in the top 32, while Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo fell in the top 16.
