At the end of a hotly contested meeting against Jacques-Olivier Moers (6/2, 5/7, 6/2), Guillaume Bousquet won his first French champion title in the 55-year-old men’s category.
Accustomed to the test, Guillaume Bousquet (3/6, PCA) had never left with the gold medal around his neck: it is now a done deal!
In a very tough field in the 55-year-old men’s category, he was able to do well by winning all his meetings in style. A title that “represents a lot” says the person concerned. “It’s quite a commitment, I train, I prepare, it’s not something that just happens.”
“We have a category in 55 which is very dense, I think that the eight quarter-finalists could win,” judges the new French champion. “The reality of each match is that in the semi-final I win 6/2, 6/1, but if we replay it ten times, I would never win again with that score. (laughs).” Despite the intensity of each meeting and the excellent level of his opponents, he reached the final without losing a single set.
A licensee of the Aix Country Club since 1998, Guillaume won his final game after a long battle against a player he knows well: Jacques-Olivier Moers (3/6, IDF).
“We played in the +35s twenty years ago and he beat me in two sets.,” recalls Guillaume Bousquet.
“He’s someone who has a super brilliant game, who has dominated the category in some years and who has won the title several times, but I knew that I could make the difference physically, so I approached the third set quite calmly.”
A first victory gleaned in a unique atmosphere at Le Touquet and the desire to quickly start again for the neo-champion! “There was a nice conviviality, people could move very easily from one court to another and the atmosphere was friendly. I found it to be a great place for this kind of event..”
