The market value update for the 2nd Bundesliga focuses on talent. Six of the seven biggest winners are 20 years old or younger – only top scorer Christos Tzolis is just above that at 22. In terms of squad values, the most obvious cuts are made at Hamburger SV, after the former Bundesliga dinosaur missed out on returning to the top flight for the sixth time in a row. The situation is completely different for the promoted teams Holstein Kiel and FC St. Pauli.

With an increase of 3 million euros, Tzolis is one of the footballers in the lower house who has made the most gains. The winger from Fortuna Düsseldorf scored 22 goals in 30 matches, which put him in the top scorer award together with Robert Glatzel (30) and Haris Tabakovic (29). With 10 million euros, he is now the sixth most valuable Greek professional and the second most valuable in the 2nd division. Only Nuremberg’s Can Uzun (18), voted player of the season in the 2nd Bundesliga by the transfer market community, is ahead of him with an unchanged 12 million euros – neither of them are likely to play for their current clubs next season.

“The loan from Norwich City was the factor for an extremely successful season at Fortuna, which was only stopped in the relegation second leg. Fortuna has now exercised the purchase option, but Tzolis is being linked with several first division clubs, so he will probably be sold on in the summer,” explains market value admin Julius Weißenstein (“Savarez03”) about the attacker, who has an exit clause in his new Fortuna contract that allows him to change clubs under certain conditions during the next transfer period.

Market value update 2. Bundesliga: Wanner, Maza & Ouédraogo on the rise

FC Bayern’s loan to SV Elversberg Paul Wanner (18), who impressed as a regular with ten scorers, also received an upgrade of the same amount. At 8 million euros, only Schalke’s Assan Ouédraogo (18) is valued higher compared to all German U18 youngsters. Expert Weißenstein says: “The offensive midfielder developed into an increasingly important player over the course of the season, with whom SV Elversberg was able to secure its place in the league early on. With his performances, Wanner attracted attention from various Bundesliga clubs and PSV Eindhoven.”

Only Hertha’s Ibrahim Maza (18) has increased his market value even more significantly than the duo. The increase for the Berlin homegrown player is a whopping 3.5 million euros compared to the last update. “The highly praised offensive talent from Hertha BSC made his first appearance of the season in February after a long-term injury and quickly became a revitalizing factor in the offensive midfield. With his creativity and versatility, the 18-year-old has attracted the interest of numerous clubs from home and abroad. He is already one of the strongest talents in the 2nd division,” explains market value admin Marcel Fritze (“becks_fan93”), explaining Maza’s jump to 5 million euros.

Also on the up are young stars Tom Rothe (19; +2 million to 8 million euros), who was loaned to Holstein Kiel from Borussia Dortmund, and Finn Jeltsch (17; +2 million to 5 million euros), Nuremberg’s U17 world and European champion. After a temporary standstill due to injury, Schalke’s Ouédraogo is also continuing to rise. After a 2 million euro upgrade, the highly-rated youngster is now valued at 10 million euros, putting him on a par with Tzolis. In a comparison of all German central midfielders, Ouédraogo is also on the same level as Gladbach’s Rocco Reitz (22).

“Ouédraogo was often injured, but he was still able to show what incredible talent he has. After Bayern Munich turned him down, the 18-year-old is increasingly being linked with RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt and several Premier League clubs. A transfer this summer is considered a given,” says Weißenstein, assessing the situation of the Gelsenkirchen player. With Keke Topp (20; +1.5 million to 3 million euros), there is another big winner in the S04 ranks.

But the player with the most significant downgrade in the update also comes from the Royal Blues. For Brandon Soppy (22), who Schalke loaned from Atalanta Bergamo in the winter, the price is down by one million to two million euros – the Frenchman is the only one to lose a seven-figure sum in the league. Expert Fritze explains: “As he did in Italy, he went from one injury to the next at Schalke and never really got into a rhythm. He has only played five games in the second half of the season, too few to be able to maintain his high market value. His constant physical problems have caused him to lose a lot of his standing.”

HSV biggest squad value loser – increases at Holstein Kiel & FC St. Pauli

Overall, HSV lost the most value. The Rothosen had 15 downgrades and two upgrades (Miro Muheim, Matheo Raab), which ultimately resulted in a loss of 4.05 million euros in terms of squad value. Five players were deducted 500,000 euros, including Ludovit Reis (24; down to 4.5 million euros) and captain Sebastian Schonlau (29; down to 1.5 million euros).

“Unfortunately, HSV can be summed up as follows: some of the core players are reaching an age where adjustments have to be made. In addition, many players have relatively high market values who could not be kept due to dips in performance or a lack of playing time. Youngsters, meanwhile, were not used regularly this season under either Tim Walter or Steffen Baumgart,” says market value administrator Tobias Kröger (“TKhamburg”). With 40.8 million euros, Hamburg slipped from second to third place and were overtaken by Düsseldorf (+4.95 million euros). Second division champions FC St. Pauli (+4.6 million euros) also recorded a similar increase to F95, while Kieler Störche gained the most with 7.2 million euros.

How the transfer market values work

The transfer market values are calculated taking into account various pricing models and a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market values are not to be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.

The aim is not to predict a price, but an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are here Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
