Harry Kane, 30, insists England have achieved their mission by topping Group C at this year’s European Football Championship despite only being held to a 0-0 draw by Slovenia on Tuesday. In addition, Gareth Southgate’s men enter the knockout stage with a meager score of 2:1.

The England international was booed by his own fans at the Cologne stadium after the final whistle on Tuesday night after putting on a lackluster display and only being held to a goalless draw by paper-less Slovenia.

However, a third consecutive lackluster performance did not prevent England from topping Group C, which could offer them a potentially easier route to the finals.

England captain Kane said his team-mates also performed better than in the 1-1 draw with Denmark and the 1-0 win against Serbia that preceded the match against Slovenia.

“Topping the group was our goal even before the tournament started. We wanted to be able to control our own destiny. I think we played much better than in other games,” Kane said.

“We just couldn’t crown it with a better final phase. But we are looking forward to the next matches and are positive. We created several half-chances and there were some that we could have managed better,” added the Bayern Munich striker.

Coach Southgate’s moves in the second half also helped England. Substitutes Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer revived the game and injected the missing energy into a moribund team.

“I think the lads who came on did really well and kept the level of play up. That’s what we need. We need everyone to chip in,” Kane said. The experienced striker has no doubts about England’s chances of winning their first major trophy in 58 years. According to him, the three lions are heading in the right direction.

“All matches are difficult. We have been in a similar situation in the past and we were able to improve even more when we got to the knockout stages,” he added.
