Historic Victories and Major Upsets in Copa América 2024 Double Round

The Copa América 2024 had another interesting double round, on Thursday night (27).

Hosts USA lost 2-1 to Panama, and Uruguay did their homework by beating Bolivia 5-0.

In the first game of the night, complete madness! Early expulsion, “use and abuse” of VAR, upset and another expulsion!

USA 1 x 2 Panama was indeed historic. For example, because it was the first match in the history of the Copa América to have three corrections by VAR (McKennie’s goal disallowed, Tim Weah’s expulsion and a penalty disallowed for the Panamanians).

Aside from the entire political-social context, Panama’s victory over the USA is also historic as it is the first victory and leaves the hosts of the Copa América 2024 at serious risk of elimination in the first phase.

Uruguay’s victory over Bolivia was more “protocolal”. A 5 x 0 to leave Celeste with “one and a half feet” in the quarterfinals of the Copa América.

Without as many “interesting facts” as the preliminary, all that was left was to admire the quality of the bench that Marcelo “El Loco” Bielsa has at his disposal.

And the new look of Ronald Araújo – from Barcelona – also caught attention!

By scoring against Bolivia, Darwin Núñez scored in his seventh consecutive match for Uruguay and equalled the legendary Héctor Scarone, who also scored in seven consecutive games for the Celeste between 1927 and 1928.

And look at the “suit” of the teams that the 25-year-old striker from Uruguay – and Liverpool – scored.

Uruguay did not score more than 7 goals (3 x 1 against Panama + 5 x 0 in Bolivia) in its first two Copa América matches since 1967 (4 x 0 double against Bolivia and Venezuela).

It is, quite simply, Uruguay’s biggest victory in a Copa América since the historic 5 x 0 against Argentina in 1959!

The match marked the return of Luis Suárez to the Uruguayan national team. The “Pistolero” entered the final stretch. The Uruguayan striker had not played for the Celeste since December 2022, at the Qatar World Cup against Ghana.
