Host USA must fear for promotion at Copa

With a 5-0 win over Bolivia on Thursday, Uruguay has almost secured its place in the quarter-finals of the Copa America. Tournament hosts USA, on the other hand, have to worry. The Americans, who were outnumbered for a long time, lost 2-1 to Panama in Atlanta and are under a lot of pressure in their last Group C match against Uruguay.

After Juventus legionnaire Timothy Weah was sent off in the 18th minute, the USA took the lead through Folarin Balogun from Adi Hütter’s club AS Monaco (22nd minute), but conceded the equalizer straight away (28th minute) and the decisive goal in the final minutes by Jose Fajardo (84th minute). They are level on points with Panama in the table, but at least have the better goal difference – which is decisive in the event of a tie.

Play-off against Uruguay

The group finale will be played on July 1st by Uruguay, who celebrated a goal fest against pointless bottom-placed Bolivia in East Rutherford. Facundo Pellistri, Darwin Nunez, Maximiliano Araujo, Federico Valverde and Rodrigo Bentancur scored for the winners.

The Argentinians, who have already qualified for the knockout phase, are worried about veteran Lionel Messi, who missed training on Thursday due to a thigh injury and will not play in the final group match against Peru. Coach Lionel Scaloni has announced a strong rotation anyway.
