Hungary Sets Quotas for 19 Sports at Summer Games in Paris

One month before the first day of competition in Paris, Hungary has officially set a quota or qualification level for 19 sports for the Summer Games.

Hungary has 170 quotas or qualification levels for the Olympic Games, including four qualified teams:

The men’s and women’s water polo and handball national teams will also be in Paris.

The Olympic qualifying phase in several sports ended over the weekend and it was announced that there would be no Hungarian participants in weightlifting and urban sports – BMX freestyle, skateboarding, sport climbing and breakdancing – in the French capital.

At the European Swimming Championships in Belgrade, the number of Hungarian qualifiers has increased by two, with Balázs Holló and Minna Ábrahám, but at the same time the number of Hungarian participants has decreased by two: Katalin Burián and Benedek Kovács will not be able to compete despite their Olympic level, as they are only third in the Hungarian rankings in their respective disciplines. The number of swimmers in the relay teams – currently 12 men and 10 women – could change depending on the number of men and women who are allowed to compete in the relay teams.

After a long time, two Hungarians will compete in equestrian sports at the Olympic Games, as the country managed to qualify in both eventing and dressage. The last time a Hungarian rider competed at the Olympic Games was in 1996.

In the pentathlon, however, only four Hungarian athletes will compete, although five Hungarians are already eligible to compete. In athletics, there is still the opportunity to reach a qualifying level or collect further world ranking points this week, as the qualification period ends on Sunday.

The almost two-year point-collecting phase in judo is already over, the Hungarians have seven quota places for the Olympic Games in Paris won. Five athletes have qualified for the Olympic Games in the qualifying phase. The International Judo Federation (IJF) has also given the Hungarians a free pass, so there are six athletes in the team, the seventh qualifying discipline is the mixed team competition.

The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris will take place on July 26, but the competition program begins on July 24 and 25 with rugby, football, archery and handball.
