The first day of Euro Cup definitions ended with Germany’s draw against Switzerland and Hungary’s agonizing victory against Scotland. Beyond the results, an incident caused a commotion: when 70 minutes into the match between the Hungarians and the Scots, goalkeeper Angus Gunn pushed back with his fists and hit Barnabás Varga hard in the face, who fell unconscious to the grass.

Quickly, the images moved to what happened to the Danish Christian Eriksen in the last edition of the tournament that brings together the best European teams when he suffered a heart attack and had to be removed from the playing field. Several of his teammates realized the seriousness of the blow and, seeing that Varga did not react, they requested medical assistance and surrounded him until a tarp hid the doctors’ attention from the Ferencvárosi Torna Club forward.

Once the match ended at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart, one of those who had contact with the press was Dominik Szoboszlai. The surname of the Hungarian captain went viral on social networks because he was one of the first to draw everyone’s attention due to the crash that Varga suffered. In addition to that, the fans applauded how he joined in to help the medical service assistants bring in the stretcher that then took the attacker off the field.

In their dialogue in the mixed zone, the Liverpool footballer from England was very harsh with the assistance his teammate received. “I really don’t know how the protocol works. But if our doctors said I needed (Varga) assistance immediately, they shouldn’t walk. It is not my decision, but I think they need to change something,” were his first statements.

“If someone is on the ground, and you saw that it was something big (due to the collision), you have to enter. Even if the referee doesn’t give you access, you have to go. And if they see that it’s nothing serious, then you can take your time. But seconds count in these cases,” Szoboszlai added. After more than eight minutes of uncertainty in the stadium, Varga was finally carried on a stretcher non-stop to the Stuttgart hospital.

As the hours passed, the Hungarian Federation confirmed that the footballer was stable and conscious after the crash. In addition to that, he gave details of the consequences left by the strong collision with the Scotland goalkeeper: Varga suffered “several bones in his face” broken, in addition to having suffered a “concussion” after the impact.

“He will probably need surgery on his face and nose,” said Captain Szoboszlai. “I think he’ll have to go into surgery tomorrow. “He looked bad, he was bad and he felt bad,” the Hungarian player added in his description of the incident that shocked everyone present in Stuttgart.

With the victory in the 99th minute thanks to Kevin Csoboth’s goal, Hungary will have to wait to see if they will continue in the competition or be eliminated from the Euro Cup. With Germany, as group leader, and Switzerland progressing to the round, the Hungarians could only aspire to be one of the four best third parties. But their score (3) and having a negative goal difference (-3) put their continuity in serious doubt.
