“I hope that some players will use the remaining days to get into competition mode”

MADRID, 28 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The national basketball coach, Sergio Scariolo, is confident that his players will continue to grow between now and the upcoming Pre-Olympic Games in Valencia next week, in order to help Spain qualify for the Paris 2024 Games, after a final “competitive training session” this Friday against the Dominican Republic.

“A competitive training session against a team that always knows how to make things difficult, with a lot of talent, at one and two, showing the difference between being an NBA player and the rest of the world. Little by little we have taken the measure defensively of what what we had to do,” he said after the victory (84-74) in Alicante.

Spain left behind a bad streak of five consecutive defeats just before the qualification tournament for the Games, where Scariolo’s team will host in La Fonteta. The Italian coach pointed out that they need to add troops and be very strong in defense. “Obviously, still with points to improve. I hope that some player uses the remaining days to enter competition mode, leave behind the season, good or bad it has been, and to be able to enter and contribute to his team, and everyone defending,” he said.

“We know that we have very marked, very clear offensive limitations, and that we can increase that score if we manage to run. You only run if you defend at a very high level, not good, very high. That is the challenge to be able to compete,” term.
