Illegal Dumping of Large Waste in Flower Beds: A Growing Concern

[헤럴드경제=주소현 기자] “Someone’s conscience is rolling around miserably here.”

A black massage chair and a golf bag were found lying in a flower bed in a residential area in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. When they did not disappear after a few days, a note containing a somewhat harsh scolding was attached to them, saying, “If you throw them away like this with bad conscience, you will suffer. Let’s do better in the future.”

As expected, the cost of disposing of this waste is not expensive compared to its large volume. A golf bag costs 3,000 won and a massage chair costs 10,000 won.

The streets are suffering from large wastes like this that are left unattended without collection notification. It is also a source of irritation for neighbors.

Cannot be separated for recycling All trash can be disposed of only at a cost.. If it is a size that does not fit into the volume-based pay-as-you-go bag, you must report it to the community center and pay a fee.

You don’t have to worry about how much to pay for each piece of trash. There are various items and sizes, from basic furniture such as beds, sofas, tables, and chairs to mannequins, wreaths, golf club bags, and wall clocks. Even sports equipment such as badminton rackets, bowling balls, etc. are priced. Dumbbells are only 500 won per kg.

After reporting, you must print out a waste sticker and attach it. If printing is difficult or you paid by mobile phone, you can write down the information by hand and attach it.

If you secretly dispose of waste on the street, in a hill, or at a waste collection site without receiving a sticker, it is considered unauthorized dumping and a fine of up to 1 million won will be imposed under the Waste Management Act.

The reason why you must report is because if you do not report, you cannot collect it. Unlike garbage bags or recyclables that are collected by simply putting them out at a designated time and place, collection companies only visit the places where large waste is reported.

An official from a waste collection company explained, “We go to the community center in the order they were reported to the residents,” and “It usually takes 3 to 4 days, and during moving season when the amount of waste increases, it can take a little longer.”

However, electronic products are an exception. Small waste appliances less than 1m in size can be disposed of at the disposal site without separate reporting. If you have five or more small waste home appliances, you can apply for a free collection service. The same goes for heavy home appliances such as TVs and refrigerators. Of course, there is no fee when applying, and we will visit your home to collect it.

The fee depends on whether it is recycled or not. Waste home appliances are recycled, but large-sized waste is sent to a resource recycling center by collection companies and incinerated.

If you don’t want to spend money throwing away trash, just don’t throw it away. If you give away for free or sell used goods, not only do you not have to pay a commission, but it is also an opportunity to make money. If you can afford it, rewriting it is another option. You can also search for a professional collection company for each item.
