Did Alexander Zverev (27) strangle his ex?
On Monday morning (June 3rd) the trial against the tennis pro entered the second round in Berlin. His ex Brenda Patea (30) accuses him of domestic violence – he denies everything. RTL met the former “Germany’s next Top Model” candidate in front of the courthouse – you can see her reaction in the video.
Brenda Patea: “I want it to start”
Things got serious for Brenda Patea. The 30-year-old testified under oath against her ex Alexander Zverev on Monday. This was actually supposed to happen on Friday, but Zverev’s legal team had filed a motion that the testimony should only take place in camera in order to protect his and his daughter’s personal rights. This motion has now been granted. The judge said that it was to be expected that highly personal areas of life and details of the relationship between the two people would be addressed during the questioning. These were worthy of protection.
Shortly after 1 p.m., the trial day was unexpectedly over. “She’s not feeling well, she’s hoarse and has a fever,” her lawyer Michael Nitschke told Bild. “She has to go to bed so that she’ll be fit again tomorrow morning.” Patea had already revealed in an RTL interview that morning that she wasn’t feeling well and was feeling under the weather. “I want it to start,” she said.

Zverev was not present at the hearing; he is currently playing at the French Open in Paris. Speaking to the Bild newspaper on the sidelines of the tournament, he said: “At the end of the day, I believe in the German legal system and in the truth. I know what I did and I know what I didn’t do. That will come out at the end of the day, and I have to trust in that. I believe that I won’t lose.”
In November 2019, the former GNTM candidate and the tennis pro made their relationship public – but just eight months later, their love is said to have died out again. After the separation, their daughter Mayla (3) was born. The parents share custody, and Zverev pays maintenance for the little one.

What is the process about?
The incident is said to have occurred on the night of May 20-21, 2020. But Brenda did not report her ex until October 14, 2021. The case was already heard in Berlin in October 2023 – a fine of 450,000 euros (90 daily rates of 5,000 euros each) was issued against Zverev. But the 27-year-old lodged an appeal. A total of ten days of hearings are scheduled until July 19, 2024. The presumption of innocence applies until a conviction.
