“I’m ready to win Wimbledon after Roland Garros”

MADRID, 29 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz is confident of his chances of defending his Wimbledon title and adding to the one he won last month at Roland Garros, despite a short preparation on grass after his early elimination at Queen’s, “a very difficult and big challenge” for which he showed himself “prepared.”

The reigning champion in London said at a press conference on Saturday that he has watched more videos of himself from last year than those of Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, as he did last season. “I watched videos of myself from last year, I’m not going to lie,” he said with a smile.

“Just to see what I did or how I did it. Just moving, hitting shots, to do the same thing I did last year,” added Alcaraz who is confident in his candidacy to win what would be his fourth ‘Grand Slam’ with 21 years.

“Winning Grand Slams is difficult. Obviously changing from clay to grass, totally different surfaces, totally different game. Let’s say I’m going to try. Obviously I want to put my name on that short list to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. I know it’s going to be a very difficult and big challenge for me, but I think I’m ready to do it,” he said.

Only Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Nadal, Federer and Djokovic have managed to achieve that double in the same season. On the other hand, the Murcian referred to the defeat in the second round at Queen’s. “I’m doing a great job these last few weeks to prepare myself and feel comfortable to play Wimbledon here at 100%,” he said.

“I feel very good. Honestly, after Queen’s I had a lot of days to adapt my game, to improve. I remember that after losing at Queen’s, the next day I started practicing my movements, my shots, just to be more comfortable moving on grass. I’ve had great training sessions with great players. Right now I think I’m ready to start the tournament,” concluded Alcaraz, who will debut on Monday against Estonian Mark Lajal.
