Increase in Quota of Foreign Players Confirmed for 2024-2025 League 1 Season: Impact on Local Players and National Team

KOMPAS.com – Through the General Meeting of Shareholders (GMS) on Wednesday (26/6/2024), the operator of the League 1 competition, PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) confirmed that the quota of foreign players for the 2024-2025 season has increased.

The number of foreign players, which was six last season, has now increased to eight.

LIB remains firm even though this regulation raises pros and cons among football stakeholders.

The quota of eight foreign players is free from any country, it is not stipulated that they must come from an Asian country.

Of the eight, only six players are allowed to play together on the field. This means that a foreign player on the bench must replace another foreign player who is already on the field if the quota of six has been fulfilled.

“If you bring in new good foreign players, it will be more difficult for local players. But, at the same time, it adds to the quality of the league,” Hodak said.

Indirectly, local players must improve their level of play to compete to enter the first 11 of League 1 clubs.

Hodak assessed that the additional quota of foreign players would also have a positive impact on the national team, with the league having good players.
