Jannik Sinner made it to the quarter-finals at the grass tournament in Halle/Westphalia. What made the fans particularly happy was that Sinner was on the court longer than initially expected. And he once again offered a phenomenal shot that is increasingly becoming his trademark.

On Tuesday, Jannik Sinner fought his way back into the match with a spectacular point win in the first round against Tallon Griekspoor. This Thursday, he repeated the showpiece and paved his way to the quarterfinals. He defeated the strong Fabian Marozsan 6:4, 6:7, 6:3.

The scene of the match occurred at the beginning of the third set: The second game was in progress when Marozsan lobbed a drop ball over the net. Sinner seemed to have already been beaten, but then he dove into the trajectory, somehow got the felt ball over the net and rolled across the grass in the best Boris Becker style. Sinner had already shown exactly the same shot in the first game, with one difference: this time his showpiece did not lead directly to a point win, because Marozsan was able to react again before Sinner, who had now pulled himself together, sealed the deal. This paved the way for the important break to make it 2-0. After that, the South Tyrolean did not let anyone take the butter off his bread.

Marozsan has long been equal

In the two previous sets, the world number one and the number 45 from Hungary were on equal terms. Both served very well and quickly tried to win points in the short rallies. Marozsan played his very best tennis, while Sinner made unusual forehand errors every now and then. With a break at 4:4, Sinner ran away to win the first set. Marozsan won the second set after his opponent was too careless and prone to errors in the tiebreak. A short time later, Sinner got the audience out of their seats with his showpiece performance, and he reached the quarterfinals as a result.

For Sinner, however, the working day in Halle is not over yet. In the early evening, he and Hubert Hurkacz will compete in the doubles quarter-finals against the French duo Doumbia/Reboul.

Now against Tsitsipas?

Sinner will play his quarter-finals in singles on Friday. His opponents will be either Stefanos Tsitsipas, number eleven in the world rankings, or the local German Jan-Lennard Struff (ATP 41). The Sextner has already played against Tsitsipas nine times, but has only won three times. The record against Struff is different, with Sinner still undefeated in two encounters.
