Indonesian and Rwandan Foreign Ministers Meet in Jakarta to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation and Discuss Global Issues

The two foreign ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Political Consultations, which will serve as a basis for discussing various aspects of bilateral cooperation and exchanging ideas on international affairs.

«Indonesia and Rwanda have also intensified their security cooperation in recent years. Currently, the two countries are finalizing the Memorandum of Understanding between the Police of both countries in relation to dealing with transnational organized crime and strengthening capacity building,” stated Foreign Minister Retno.

«We believe that the opportunity to continue growing is still very open. To foster economic cooperation, today we have signed a General Cooperation MOU that includes, among others, trade, agriculture, industry, energy and mining,” stated Foreign Minister Retno. The two foreign ministers also discussed the plan to form an Indonesia-Rwanda preferential trade agreement (PTA) and studied the formation of an Indonesian PTA with the East African Community (EAC).

Thirdly, intercommunity relations. Both countries have signed a visa waiver agreement for diplomatic and service passport holders. Meanwhile, Rwanda has been included in Indonesia’s Visa on Arrival (VoA) list since February 2023. This is expected to increase the intensity of public relations between both countries, including the business community. In addition to bilateral issues, the two foreign ministers also discussed global issues, specifically Palestine.

The two foreign ministers also discussed the plan to form an Indonesia-Rwanda preferential trade agreement (PTA).

Indonesia and Rwanda share the same view of continuing to strengthen support for Palestine, in order to realize Palestinian independence based on a two-state solution. The two Foreign Ministers also agreed to foster unity and the role of the Global South in determining the global agenda. In this sense, the minister thanked the confirmation of Rwanda’s participation in the II Africa Indonesia Forum, which will be held in September 2024 in Bali.

In addition to the bilateral meeting, Foreign Minister Retno attended the inauguration of the Rwandan embassy in Jakarta.

«Rwanda and Indonesia are both members of the Non-Aligned Movement, of the G-77, and the greatest peacemakers. The opening of the Rwandan embassy in Jakarta, in addition to strengthening bilateral cooperation, will also strengthen Indonesia’s cooperation with Africa in general,” Retno stated in his speech at the Rwandan embassy.
