Inexperienced Judo Austria Team Faces Challenges at Under-18 European Championships

On Friday, the second day of competition at the Under-18 European Championships in Sofia (BUL), the extremely young, inexperienced Judo Austria team did not achieve more than respectable results. Katharina Mikota (-57/UJZ Mühlviertel/OÖ) and Mavie Rabl (-63/JZ Innsbruck/T) offered impressive performances, but were ultimately both eliminated (early) in the repechage.

Katharina Mikota, 16, celebrated an Ippon victory in the preliminary round against Viktorija Kergalve (LAT), but then had to admit defeat to Aleksandra Shestopalova (AIN) and Ugne Skeryte (LTU) in the repechage. Mavie Rabl, 15, lost to Ilariia Tsurkan (UKR) and Martina Obrador Gonzalez (ESP). “Both of them made small mistakes under pressure, but more could have been possible for Katharina and Mavie today,” analyzed ÖJV national coach Martin Grafl. Postscript: “On the third day, we have our most experienced and probably strongest athletes in action with Claire Pröll and Vardges Ghazaryan.”

Saturday, 3rd day of competition (10:30/16:30), -70, 1st round: Claire Pröll (UJZ Mühlviertel/OÖ) – Maria Eleni Papaioannou (GRE), +70, 1st round: Michaela Höllwart – Sema Mete (TUR), in round 2 the number 1 Zuzanna Banaszewska (POL, third in the Youth World Championships last year) would be waiting, -90, 1st round: Lorenz Horngacher (JZ Innsbruck/T) – Huzeyn Eyvazli (AZE), +90, 1st round: Vardges Ghazaryan (SU Karuna/W) – Catelin Plesca (MDA), in round 2 Nodar Kobaladze (GEO/2) would be waiting.
