After her injury-related withdrawal in Berlin, Marketa Vondrousova has to worry about her start at Wimbledon.

The year 2024 has not been very kind to Marketa Vondrousova so far. After the Wimbledon champion had abandoned or cancelled the Sunshine Double tournaments in the USA in the spring due to the death of her grandfather, the next personal blow came with the divorce from her husband Stepan Simek after 21 months of marriage.

In sporting terms, the Czech had only just recovered with a convincing quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros before the next misfortune befell her. In the round of 16 at the WTA grass tournament in Berlin, the 24-year-old was serving to win the set against Russian Anna Kalinskaya at 5:3 when she slipped while changing direction and almost did the splits. After getting up and grabbing the area between her right thigh and hip in pain, she was treated in a medical time-out. After two more games, both of which she had to give up, she finally gave up the match.

Whether Vondrousova will be able to continue the grass court season, culminating in defending her title at the Major on Church Road, remains a big question mark. Before the Grand Slam tournament in London, the left-hander had planned to start at the WTA 500 tournament in Bad Homburg.
