Aryna Sabalenka had to give up in Berlin on Saturday afternoon due to injury.

The quarter-final match between Aryna Sabalenka and Anna Kalinskaya, which was postponed from Friday to Saturday, lasted a full six games. The world number three was prevented from continuing to play due to a shoulder injury. The 26-year-old decided to retire early, especially with the prospect of another match waiting in the late afternoon.

Ons Jabeur was able to keep up with her opponent Coco Gauff on the court for longer. A long first set was decided in the tiebreak and this was also hard fought. The American won it 11:9 and went into the break with a set lead. Ons Jabeur received treatment and did not continue the match due to illness.

Pegula and Azarenka with a clear advantage

Jessica Pegula had a small advantage on Saturday afternoon, having to abandon her quarter-final match against Katerina Siniakova on Friday evening when the score was 7:6(2), 3:6, 4:2, meaning she only had to play a short game to reach the semi-finals. And so three more games were enough to make the victory perfect. Her long-time doubles partner Coco Gauff is now waiting for a duel in the semi-finals.

Things went even better for Viktoria Azarenka, who was the only player to make it to the semi-finals on Friday. Azarenka also benefited from her opponent’s retirement. Elena Rybakina gave up after just four games due to illness. Anna Kalinskaya will therefore face a well-rested opponent this afternoon.
