There is a baseball team that is both active and rooted in the community.
“Here we go!”
On a Sunday in June, the cheers of elementary school students echoed across the grounds of Tajimi Technical High School (Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture).
Tajimi Technical High School pitcher Shin Komatsu (3rd year) throws the ball softly.
An elementary school girl swings her bat and a strong hit ball rolls. “Nice batting!” “Amazing!” The baseball team members praised her.
The veteran team, which has experience competing in both the spring and summer Koshien tournaments, now opens part of its grounds to the local community and holds “baseball classes” to teach elementary school students about 15 times a year. About 10 elementary school teams from the Tono region, including Tajimi City, participate.
“We practice here, aiming for Koshien. Over here, the club members and elementary school students have fun playing baseball. A space like this is rare,” says coach Takashi Aoki (40), who has been running the classes for about six years and came up with the idea.
The ace pitcher conveys the joy of baseball, and some children come to cheer him on at the games.
On this day, 11 members of the “Nemoto Club” in the city came. Of the approximately 50 members of Tajimi Tech, 15 became “teachers” on this day. The remaining members practiced as usual.
Ace pitcher Komatsu, who was the driving force behind the team’s run to the top 16 in the spring prefectural tournament with his diverse range of breaking balls, is also the leader of the class.
“I try to convey to children that baseball is fun,” said Komatsu. Renji Takahashi (6th grade), who participated for the third time, said, “I especially enjoy batting practice. I was also taught how to throw with all my might.” Smiles were spreading among the parents who watched their children play with all their might.
The team has gained fans in the local area, and some players have gone on to Tajimi Technical High School, with two members being from Nemoto Club.
“When the cute voices of the children resonate, the atmosphere at practice here also improves,” said Coach Aoki. The team’s ties with the local community have deepened, and before the summer Gifu tournament, the children gave them autographs with their names written on them and came to support them. Captain Kodai Naruse (3rd year) said, “It’s nice to see the children we taught come to support us. If they come to the next summer tournament, it will be a great help and I think it will make us feel like we’re definitely going to win.”
“I wanted to be a baseball club that was needed in the community,” said Coach Aoki. He also had doubts about the past trend that “high school baseball is tough.” “Baseball is supposed to be fun. I want to create an atmosphere where everyone can enjoy baseball equally.”
Coach Aoki believes that Koshien is the stage for players to progress through club activities and classes.
