Carlos Sainz responded to his teammate Charles Leclerc’s comment after the race.

The Ferrari drivers fought a sharp battle at the beginning of the race. “It was a bit unnecessary, but at the same time I understand that it was his home race and it’s also an important moment in his career, so I think he wanted to do something spectacular. But I wasn’t the right person to show it off,” said Leclerc.

Sainz responded to Leclerc’s words for Sky Sports. “I think it happens too often that he complains about something after the race,” said Sainz.

“I attacked. We had new soft tyres, Mercedes was running on used ones and we had to go on the attack in the first laps when we had the new tires and try to overtake them, as we even said before the race. I overtook Charles because I don’t know if he made a mistake or if he was just saving the tires a little too much….”

After passing his teammate, Sainz caught up and attacked Lewis Hamilton. “I almost passed Lewis, I undercut Lewis, we almost passed Russell at the pit stop. I think I tried there what I have to try as a rider, what is required of me as a rider. And he chose to save more on tires.”

“It kind of paid off for him in the end because he beat me in the end with a soft-medium-soft strategy. I chose aggressive driving and soft – medium – hard. And it didn’t pay off for me. I think George and I on the hard tires were too slow at the end, while the guys on the softs were very fast.”
