Italian Cadets Shine at European Championships: Alice Bersellini Takes Fifth Place

Alice Bersellini’s fifth place and Giulia Sorelli and Maila Pagliaro’s seventh places are the result of the Azzurrini in the Asics Arena in Sofia on the second day of the European Cadet Championships.

With five girls competing and three placings, the result, even without medals, would not be negative, but the regret for the numerous aspects that influenced a day that could have been much more generous is equally evident.

With a wazari of o uchi gari Alice Bersellini passed the first round of the 52 kg with the Ukrainian Yelyzaveta Yemelianova, then replicating the victory with ippon of koshi jime over the Cypriot Adamantia Christodoulidou. Another victory, the third, was obtained over the Dutch Elise Rustige following a waki gatame sanctioned with disqualification. In the semi-final with the Spanish Monica Martinez De Rituerto Morillas and in the final for third place with the French Clarisse Carillon, however, Alice Bersellini changed her attitude by having a wazari come back from the Spaniard and bowing for three penalties for going out with the French.

“The day didn’t start in the best way,” he said. Alice Bersellini– I didn’t feel well physically and unfortunately in the quarterfinals I hurt myself on an injury I had previously and subsequently I didn’t perform to my full potential. I don’t blame the circumstances but I will use this experience to learn from my mistakes and try to reach the best version of myself. I hope the best is yet to come”.

Three victories were also achieved by Giulia Sorelli in the 57 kg over the Turkish Zeynep Ozturk, the Slovenian Haya Veinhandl Obaid and, in the repechage, over the Ukrainian Diana Balbek, and Maila Pagliaro in the 63 kg over Ingrid Komodowski (Den), Nana Gulbani (Geo) and Sinem Oruc (Tur), but both were stopped in the quarter-finals and in the second injury time.

In the 57 kg category Martina Capezzuto fought with determination, but it wasn’t enough against the German Katharina Kaiser or even against Ciska Adema (Ned), while in the 63 kg category Laura Covre from Friuli saw, surprised and astonished, her uchi mata wazari transformed into a hansokumake for diving.

Francesca Campanini: “We close this second day of the Cadet European Championships with a fifth place for Alice Bersellini, who demonstrated great competitiveness but suffered the consequences of an injury, and seventh places for Sorelli and Pagliaro who also demonstrated that they can compete at this level at equal to the best.

I can’t say I’m completely satisfied with the result because a day without medals can’t be entirely positive, but the girls were fine, they fought with passion, they even committed some naivety but they were always generous, even those who ended up far from the podium. Tomorrow we aim to make up for it, always go Italy!”.

Tomorrow, Saturday, on the third day there will be five Italians competing: Rachele Paris (+70), Leonardo Copat, Alex Carta (81), Tiziano Russo (90), Yossef Boutrig (+90).
