Italian national coach Luciano Spalletti has taken charge after Italy’s elimination in the round of 16 of the European Championship. The champion of the previous European Championship lost 2-0 to Switzerland.

“I am responsible. We failed because of my team selection, it is never the players’ fault,” Spalletti said at the post-match press conference. “Rhythm and freshness play an important role in a tournament. I changed a few players compared to the previous match, but it didn’t work. It wasn’t enough. We were never at our top this European Championship. The high temperatures didn’t make it any better either. comfortable.”

The Italians were outplayed by Spain in the group stage and failed to impress against the Swiss. “Our pace was too slow, especially in the first half. We could hardly create any danger afterwards,” said Spalletti, who does not yet know whether the elimination will have any consequences.

“It certainly could have been better, but we will take this experience with us. It is possible to build something, but it takes more time. A few matches could already help. I will now discuss matters with the association chairman and then we will see what the outcome is. Things have to change in the future.”
