Italy Eliminated from Euro 2024 After Disappointing Defeat to Switzerland

Defending champions Italy were eliminated in the round of 16 from Euro 2024 after a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland. “We have to make our mea culpa, apologise to the fans,” Gianluigi Donnarumma reacted immediately after the match.

The Italians were dominated by the Swiss, creating few chances during the match. “It’s a huge disappointment, we never got into the game,” Donnarumma said. “We apologize to everyone. We disappointed and they deserved it, there’s nothing else to say.”

The image of the match is perhaps the second Swiss goal, scored at the very start of the second half by Ruben Vargas, who had plenty of time to arm and roll his shot into the Italian rectangle without being worried by the defense. “We struggled throughout the match, except at the end when they got down and we managed the match a bit,” Donnarumma analyzed. “We had to do it first. In the first half, we lost too many balls, we gave them too much space, it was difficult. We are very disappointed, we must all take responsibility and move forward. We lacked the will to react, to help each other, everything was lacking today. This was seen on the ground, it is unacceptable.”
