Italy must do without defender Scalvini

Italy’s national team has suffered another setback ahead of the European Football Championship in Germany. Atalanta Bergamo’s defender Giorgio Scalvini will miss the European Championship. The 20-year-old tore a cruciate ligament in his left knee on Sunday in the last game of the season against AC Fiorentina, the Italian association announced on Monday. This makes the Europa League winner the next defender the Italians will be missing from the European Championship.

As was announced last week, Francesco Acerbi from Italian champions Inter Milan is also out. Acerbi is suffering from persistent pubic bone inflammation. According to the Italian Football Association, 25-year-old Federico Gatti is now set to step in and strengthen the “Squadra Azzurra”. As defending champions, Italy will face Albania, Spain and Croatia in Group B.
