Italy Shines at Cadet European Championships: Strong Performances and Medals for Under 18 Team

The Italy under 18 team immediately showed off their skills Sofiaon the occasion of the first day of cadet european championships obtaining a third place with Aurora Iron in the 40 kg, a fifth place with Thomas Sassi in the 55 kg and two seventh places with Thomas Ghidoni in the 50 kg and Rachele Ciavurro in the 40 kg.

Started with the victory by immobilization over the Hungarian Nora Takacs, Aurora Ferro’s race then found the red card with the Spanish Aiora Martin Carriches who, in turn, won with an immobilization in the golden score and, in the recoveries, had the better in the Italian derby with Rachele Ciavurro thanks to a wazari of ko soto gake and then for the assignment of three penalties. Finally, the final for third place should have been played with the Russian Zarina Taskulova who, having fainted in the semifinal with the French Mathilde Aurel, by regulation could no longer fight.

“I definitely consider this medal an achievement – he said Aurora– but also the beginning of a future path being a 1st year cadet and with only 3 years of judo behind me. For this medal I thank all the people who support me and put up with me every day: my teammates, my trainer Stefano, Martina and Luca, my gym Mandraccio Roma, my fundamental mom and dad and my brother Valerio who is always an example for me”.

A fine fifth place was obtained by Thomas Sassi in the 55 kg category who, despite losing at the start of the competition to Magomed Abdulaev (AIN), who later won the category, climbed up the repechage table with victories over Aleksa Milosevic (Srb), Ethan Solana (Fra) and Hayk Darbinyan (Arm), before losing by wazari in the final for third place to the Slovenian Gal Blazic.

“Today I felt good but by losing the first meeting with the winner of the category the race didn’t start in the best way – he commented Thomas Sassi– but I managed to stay focused for the repechages, even beating people I had lost to in previous competitions. I am very disappointed and frustrated because I was close to the medal I had been dreaming of for a long time, but when I return to the gym I will roll up my sleeves and correct the mistakes for the next competitions”.

Thomas Ghidoni also had a notable race who, in the 50 kg, achieved three victories over John Vincent Kuipers (Ned), Artur Davidyan (Arm) and Nelu Malic (Mda), but the defeat in the quarterfinals against the Azerbaijani Mahammadali Husiyev and, in injury time, with the Israeli Michael Eldan, both third in the end, left him in seventh place. Seventh place also for Rachele Ciavurro who, in the 40 kg, was defeated at the start of the race by the Turkish, then bronze, Busra Ceylin Coskun, then overcoming the Bulgarian Ema Vasileva in recovery before losing, as already mentioned, in the blue derby with Aurora Iron.

In the 48 kg Roberta Zedda started well by overcoming the Austrian Lena Mayrhofer, but in the following round against the Polish Barbara Twarowska she suffered an injury which prevented her from appearing in the recovery match. Rachele Moruzzi, in the same category, won by pinning Mia Simic (Bih) before losing to the Hungarian Viktoria Kiss with a yoko gake wazari.

In the 50 kg Andrea Ruggieri won in the first round over the Estonian Kristo Kolossov and then, with a wazari (or uchi gari) advantage over Shavarsh Nahapetyan (Arm) he was overtaken and overcome by the Armenian’s tomoe nage. Finally, Matteo Gualandi was unlucky and, in the 55 kg, he succumbed to the kata gatame in the golden score of the Ukrainian Khazar Heydarov and, in the recovery, he received another immobilization from Shota Bachoshvili (Geo).

Tomorrow, for Italy, only the Italians Alice Bersellini (52), Giulia Sorelli, Martina Capezzuto (57), Laura Covre and Maila Pagliaro (63) are expected on the tatami.
