James Borrego has just left the Detroit Pistons after interviewing them several times. The current assistant to Willie Green in New Orleans became the immediate favorite to take over the bench of the three-time champions when they fired Monty Williams. After covering the positions of the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers, the Pistons are the only vacancy in the league. Which makes the news even more shocking.
Detroit has reset its project for the umpteenth time, installing Trajan Langdon as president of operations to the detriment of Troy Weaver. Continuously put in question by the organization’s environment, Borrego’s decision now forces Langdon to start the search process practically from scratch with no established candidates on the horizon.
In principle, Borrego will continue alongside Green in the Pelicans. Being a move reminiscent of Kenny Atkinson’s with Charlotte Hornets, although this time nothing was signed.
