Jannik Sinner brushes aside Zhizhen Zhang and joins Hubert Hurkacz in the final in Halle, his first on grass

For his first week as world number 1, Jannik Sinner offers himself a final. The Italian beat – certainly, not without difficulty – a very good Zhizhen Zhang (42nd in the world), in two sets (6-4, 7-6 [3]) and 1h38 in Halle (Germany), this Saturday. Which allows him to qualify for his 4th final of the year and the first of his career on grass. He will face Hubert Hurkacz, who defeated Alexander Zverev a little earlier, for a first title on the surface. The two men will therefore meet again after playing together this week in doubles, in Halle.

Sinner won the first three finals he played in 2024 (Australian Open, ATP 500 in Rotterdam, Masters 1000 in Miami) and has not lost in a final since November 2023 and the Masters in Turin.

Sinner was able to convert his only break point

As since the start of the week and like any good world No. 1, Jannik Sinner did not always shine this Saturday but he was able, as often, to accelerate in important moments to win over Zhang who produced a very good tennis. Like the first set, won by Sinner 6-4 after 40 minutes of play, a break pocketed at 5-4, on his first break point. Clinical.

Jannik Sinner will (already) play his 18th final on the ATP circuit since his debut on the professional circuit in 2018. Of the first 17 finals he played, he won 13.

Less successful in the second set, he appeared a little less well physically and this slight slump allowed Zhang to obtain a set point, at 6-5. She was saved by a winning service before Sinner mastered the tie-break like a boss. A victory on Sunday against Hurkacz would give him a 4th title this year, which would confirm him as the most successful player in 2024, ahead of Carlos Alcaraz (2). Above all, a victory on grass would confirm that we will have to count on him on all surfaces, as Wimbledon arrives (July 1-14).
