Jannik Sinner successfully played his first match as the – officially – new number 1 in the world. After his opening victory in Halle, however, there was another topic of discussion.

Jannik Sinner has shown several times that he is an excellent grass court player. However, he often finds it difficult to adapt to the fastest surface on the tennis scene. The first few matches serve as an adjustment period. In the end, the 22-year-old from Sexten defeated the great grass court specialist Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 27) from the Netherlands after trailing by a set.

After the match, Sinner’s incredible cross-shot over the net in the middle of the second set was the main topic of conversation. “I don’t know how I managed it, but it was a nice jump. This point finally gave me the confidence I needed,” said Sinner after the match. The first game as number 1 in the world was of course special: “But I’m just happy to be back on the court and not in pain anymore.”

Sinner’s next match is on Thursday. He will face 24-year-old Hungarian Fabian Marozsan (ATP 45). The two have never faced each other on the ATP Tour.
