Jannik Sinner’s round of 16 match at the French Open on Sunday evening was turbulent. There was a lot to talk about afterwards.

Jannik Sinner knew from the start that Corentin Moutet would be an unpleasant opponent. But the fact that he would come up against such a tough opponent in the first set was a surprise for the Sextner. With his creative style of play, the outsider from the Paris periphery won the first set 6:2 – and let the French fans dream. But only briefly, because Sinner then played like a tarantula and ultimately secured his place in the quarter-finals with great confidence.

On Sunday evening, it was also clear that Moutet is not only a talented tennis pro, but also has a habit of playing controversial games. The world number 79 served from below three times – in tennis, that is anything but a gentlemanly gesture. “Was that a provocation? I don’t know. You’ll have to ask Moutet yourself. I always try to concentrate on myself,” says Sinner, as down-to-earth as ever.

At the press conference, the Sextner was also asked what he had learned from a match like the one on Sunday evening. “Unforeseen things happened. In the first set I perhaps made too many concentration errors, but he also played well. Of course I learned a few lessons, but I am also happy with how I reacted and was able to turn the match around.”

Sinner enjoys the Center Court

Even though he is now number 2 in the world and plays in the biggest arenas, “it is still a special feeling to be able to play an evening match on the center court at a Grand Slam tournament. That is always an honor for me. It was a special match against Moutet, and you can’t let the crowd influence you too much,” said Sinner.

The Pustertal golden boy quickly set his sights on the quarter-finals, where Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov awaits. Sinner met the world number 10 not so long ago. On March 31, the South Tyrolean won the Miami title against Dimitrov and thus moved up to second place in the world rankings. Sinner’s quarter-final against the Bulgarian will take place on Tuesday.
