The most famous tennis tournament in the world is just around the corner: the grass court classic in Wimbledon begins on Monday. Jannik Sinner has known his opening opponent since Friday afternoon, but fans are already dreaming of a real blockbuster in the second round.

For Jannik Sinner, the tournament in Wimbledon will be something very special: for the first time, he will be playing as number 1 in a Grand Slam tournament. The draw took place on Friday.

The Sexten superstar will start off by facing Yannick Hanfmann. The 32-year-old German from Karlsruhe is currently ranked 95th in the world rankings, and a year ago he reached his best ranking in the ATP computer at 45th. But it is not the first round match that has Italy’s tennis fans in its sights. Rather, their eyes are already looking one round further. Then a duel with Matteo Berrettini would be possible.

Derby against Berrettini?

If Sinner and Berrettini (he will face Marton Fucsovics) win their opening matches, there would be a derby afterwards. That would be a real cracker – and a very interesting match for the neutral spectator too.

Berrettini is known to feel at home at Wimbledon and reached his first and only Grand Slam final there in 2021. In recent months, however, the Roman has been sidelined by injuries and has dropped to 60th place in the rankings, although he has recently shown an upward trend again.

Medvedev and Alcaraz on their way to the final

The draw at Wimbledon has shown that Sinner’s road to the final will be a rocky one. Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 28) could be waiting in the third round, Ben Shelton (ATP 14) in the fourth, Daniil Medvedev (ATP 5) in the quarterfinals and Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 3) in the semifinals.

Novak Djokovic, who recently trained with Sinner after his knee operation, is seeded number 2 in the London district. However, there has not yet been a definitive OK for his comeback. Sinner will play his first round match either on Monday or Tuesday.
