The promising rider of Lotto Dstny Development Team was the best in the first mountain stage of the eight-day stage race towards the top of Pian della Mussa (1,751 m), a final climb of no less than 19 kilometers at an average of 5.6%, with regular peaks from above the 10 percent. Widar, who recently won the Alpes Isère Tour in France, kept the Dutchman Wouter Toussaint (Wanty-ReUz-Technord) and the Frenchman Mathys Rondel (Tudor Pro Cycling U23) behind him with a strong attack in the final kilometer. to unpack.

“Offense is the best defence”

“In the run-up to the tough final kilometers, teammate Milan Donie really did fantastic thinning work,” Widar reconstructs his double. “As the finish line approached, the attacks became more frequent. So I went on the offensive six kilometers from the finish arch. Attack is still the best defense. I got two riders on my team – Rondel and Toussaint – but they didn’t really want to work with me. So I consciously spared my legs a bit between the sign of two kilometers to the finish and the red rag.”

“Once I saw that, I pulled out my punch and gave everything until the end to gain as much time as possible on the competition,” says Widar, who started the Giro Next Gen strongly with a ninth place in the opening time trial. “That result was indeed unexpected, but it did suggest the best. Hopefully I can get through the next stages well so that I can prepare for Friday’s tough mountain stage without any worries.”
