The Italian, already a neophyte in the round of 16 at Porte d’Auteuil, dominated the Russian after a failed first round on Monday.

A frantic climb. Jasmine Paolini (seeded n°12), building on her excellent start to the season, defeated Elina Avanesyan (70th in the world) in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros (4-6, 6-0, 6- 1), Monday June 3. The Italian, who reached her best career ranking this year (12th in the world) and achieved her first success in the WTA 1000 in Dubai in February, is reaching a new level. Largely dominant after a failed first round, she took advantage of her opponent’s numerous blunders: 34 unforced errors for Elina Avanesyan, for only nine winning shots.

To reach the first quarter-finals of her Grand Slam career, Jasmine Paolini overturned a poorly started match on the Suzanne-Lenglen court, after a completely missed first set (23 unforced errors). Dictating the game from the baseline, the one who only entered the world top 30 last October at the age of 27, thwarted an opponent who was also a novice at this level. After her first round of 16 at the Australian Open in January, Jasmine Paolini will play her first quarter-final against Elena Rybakina (seeded no. 4), who beat Elina Svitolina (seeded no. 15) a a little earlier.
