Jérémy Doku’s Complicated Evening: A Closer Look

Jérémy Doku had a complicated evening this Monday. Once Belgium led, almost none of his dribbles went through… and they were led largely because of him.

On his first catch, we had a big smile. Jérémy Doku had pulled off a “Jerre-style” action, a fantastic ride from his own half, resisting several opponents, and made the right move at the end of the race to pick up Kevin De Bruyne.

Unfortunately, this will be Doku’s only real stroke of genius in this match. In the 7th minute, the Manchester City winger, pressed against the corner line, attempted a suicidal throw towards Wout Faes, who did not expect it. We know the rest.

A Doku error, so what?

“It’s very hard for Jérémy. It hurts him a lot, he doesn’t deserve that. But when a goal is conceded, it’s often that a mistake is made, it happens, it’s part of the game”, put things into perspective Domenico Tedesco at a press conference. Amadou Onana reacted even more firmly for his part (read here).

Kevin De Bruyne’s reaction, in his style, spoke volumes: “No, I didn’t say anything to Doku after this phase. Why should I?”, he said wearily. The real answer is: because it’s the role of a captain, but we know what KDB means by that: Jérémy Doku did nothing wrong.

Firstly, because he should never have found himself cornered in such a position, and other players should have come and asked for the ball so that the throw-in was not done towards the back, on the poor Doku. Then because despite the weight of this (undeniable) error, Jérémy Doku continued to try.

Clearly wanting to force things, to make up for it, which is almost never a good thing unless your name is Ronaldinho – or Eden Hazard. “Jerre” is still far from this level, but let’s not doubt it: for the Devils to raise their heads and go far in the tournament, it will take a great Doku, and this is the time to support him rather than ‘to press in.
