Jessica Pegula, ranked fifth in the world rankings, has won the highly competitive tennis tournament in Berlin. The American defeated Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6:7 (0:7), 6:4, 7:6 (7:3) in the high-class final of the WTA 500 tournament on Sunday and got in the mood for the grass court classic in Wimbledon with her fifth singles title.

In the third set, the 30-year-old was already 1:4 behind. She later fended off several match points and finally took her first chance to win after 2:38 hours.

Pegula was not one of the favorites at the event, but also benefited from the tasks of the title candidates. Both Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova and crowd favorite Ons Jabeur as well as Grand Slam winners Aryna Sabalenka and Jelena Rybakina were unable to finish their matches due to injuries.

German tennis professionals disappointed

The tournament in Grunewald was disappointing for Germany’s tennis hopes. For Angelique Kerber and Jule Niemeier it was already over after the first round.

The WTA 500 tournament in Grunewald has a prize pool of 922,573 US dollars and serves as preparation for the Wimbledon classic, which begins on July 1.
