Roland Garros: Legend mocks tennis superstar’s lack of make-up on TV

Polish fans promptly renamed the French Open “Poland Garros” after Iga Swiatek won the women’s title for the fourth time in the last five years on Saturday against Jasmine Paolini. The number 1 from Warsaw is currently almost unbeatable, especially on clay, and is setting new standards in women’s tennis.
Swiatek’s successes are of course also being noticed in the USA, where legend John McEnroe works as a tennis expert and co-commentator for NBC. But more than the praise for her sporting performance, McEnroe’s comment about Swiatek’s appearance is causing a stir.

“Do you think she’ll wear a bit of makeup if Lancôme pays her the right price?” McEnroe asked with a mocking undertone during the live broadcast of the Paris final. Swiatek had recently announced a partnership with the cosmetics brand of the French group L’Oréal.
On social media, McEnroe received countless negative comments for his remark. “It makes me sick when I hear McEnroe casually criticizing Iga for not wearing more makeup in this final,” criticizes one user on X.
Swiatek asked about missing makeup as early as 2022
“Why the hell is John McEnroe talking about whether Iga will wear makeup? Talk about the damn game, you nutcase,” says someone else. Some X-users call the 65-year-old ex-pro a sexist. “Would he have said something like that about Hubert Hurkacz (Polish tennis star – editor’s note)? I don’t think so,” says one fan.
Swiatek herself has not yet commented on McEnroe’s comment. However, during her second French Open victory in 2022, she was asked by a journalist why she did not wear makeup on the tennis court. The Pole’s answer at the time: “I don’t wear makeup because I don’t feel like I have to.”
The 23-year-old equaled Martina Hingis’ career total with her fifth Grand Slam title in Paris. The Swiss has also won a major five times in her career. Swiatek is now unbeaten in 21 matches in a row at Roland Garros and, after winning her fourth title, has Paris record holder Chris Evert (seven titles) within sight.
