France, Euro 2024 squad: Why is Karim Benzema not there?
The reason why Benzema will not be taking part in the upcoming European Championship is simple: the star striker retired from the national team in December 2022. “I have written my story and ours is coming to an end,” he announced on social media after missing the World Cup in Qatar due to a thigh injury.
However, the Frenchman’s relationship with the national team had already been strained. Benzema, who had already taken part in the 2008 European Championship and scored 37 goals in 97 international matches, was no longer considered for the squad between December 2015 and spring 2021 because he was said to have blackmailed his teammate Mathieu Valbuena with a sex video.
