Klay Thompson’s Possible Departure: End of an Era for the Golden State Warriors?

Klay Thompson could apparently leave the Golden State Warriors, which could mean the end of a legendary duo in the NBA. There is interest from various teams before the start of free agency, including the Dallas Mavericks.

After the finals and the draft, the next decisions to be made in the NBA are free agency.

The Dallas Mavericks could also become active after their bitter defeat in the finals against the Boston Celtics and break up a super duo in NBA history in order to improve further. As insider Marc Stein reports, Klay Thompson and the Mavs have a “strong mutual interest”.

In all 11 seasons that Thompson played in the NBA, the 34-year-old played for the Golden State Warriors and helped the franchise to four championships during that time. Alongside superstar Stephen Curry, he became part of the “Spash Brothers,” who regularly drove opposing teams to despair with their converted three-pointers. Now, however, that era could be coming to an end because Thompson, whose contract is expiring, has not yet committed to the Warriors.

Is Klay Thompson leaving the Warriors

“With the Warriors and Thompson not even close to reaching an agreement after a turbulent season, multiple sources see the Mavericks as the favorite to sign the shooting guard,” Stein reported.

Another indication of interest from Dallas could be the departure of guard Tim Hadaway Jr., who was traded to the Detroit Pistons on Friday, according to ESPN.

Thompson could already be a possible replacement, but he has had a difficult time in recent years. Between 2019 and 2021, he missed two seasons in a row due to knee and Achilles tendon injuries.

Thompson still feared as a three-point shooter

In addition, the five-time All-Star was temporarily out of the Warriors’ rotation last season and averaged 17.9 points per game, the lowest score since 2013.

However, Thompson continues to impress as a three-point shooter. In the season before last, the shooting guard converted 41.2 percent of his shots from distance. Alongside superstars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, Thompson would therefore pose another threat as a scorer.

But the Mavericks are apparently not the only ones interested in Thompson. According to The Athletic, the Denver Nuggets and the Philadelphia 76ers are also fighting for the services of the 34-year-old.
