Wülfrath. The talented judoka Konstantin Distel from Wülfrath is facing a challenge: on Saturday he will take part in the European Championships for the second time.
While the European football championship is currently being played in Germany, the best judoka at European level will be competing for coveted titles in Sofia, Bulgaria on Saturday. Right in the middle of it all is a young athlete from Wülfrath: Konstantin Distel. After an impressive season, he was again called up to the squad for the European championship by the national coach and the German Judo Association.
Last year, Distel surprised the judo scene as an underdog and returned home with the bronze medal and a nomination for the World Championship (5th place). This year, the young fighter starts the tournament as the favorite and “world number one”, with the title in the class up to 81 kilograms in his sights.
With his repertoire of techniques and his passion for the sport, Konstantin Distel has the potential to shine again, according to Nicole Püchel from the Wülfrather Gymnastics Association. “His successes as German Champion in 2024 and three consecutive finals on the European Cup Tour speak for themselves.” The judo department at the Gymnastics Association is looking forward to the tournament with great anticipation.
