The schedule for the group draw for the third round of the 2026 World Cup Qualification will be held on Thursday (27/6) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Meanwhile, the distribution of pots 1 to 6 for the group draw has been clearly mapped out following the announcement of the latest FIFA rankings on June 20.

Japan, Iraq and South Korea, which are the three Asian countries with the highest rankings on the FIFA ranking list, occupy pot 1. Then pot 2 is filled with Australia, Qatar and Iraq. Meanwhile, pot 3 is occupied by Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Jordan.

The United Arab Emirates, Oman and Bahrain are in pot 4. China, Palestine and Kyrgyzstan are in pot 5. The Indonesian national team along with North Korea and Kuwait are in pot 6.

Later there will be three groups in the third round of the World Cup Qualifications in the Asian zone. These groups will be filled by one national team each from pots 1-6.

South Korea has a chance to meet Indonesia because it is in a different pot. Coach Shin Tae Yong once expressed his desire to bring the Garuda squad to meet the Taegeuk Warriors in the third round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifications.

Media Korea News 1 does not classify Indonesia as a country to be wary of or avoided. News1 named Australia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and North Korea as potential opponents that deserve attention.

However, it highlights the existence of STY who guided the Red and White team to advance to the third round of the World Cup Qualifications in the Asian zone.

“In addition, there are two teams that advanced to the third qualifying round with coaches who understand Korean football well, this is a concern. They are Indonesian coach Shin Tae Yong and UAE coach Paulo Bento,” wrote News 1 discussing STY who was Korea’s coach at the 2018 World Cup and Bento who brought Korea to the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup.

“The two coaches were successful in bringing Indonesia and the UAE. Shin brought Indonesia to advance to the third round of World Cup Qualification for the first time, and Bento easily passed the second round of qualification with stable performance.”

Recently rumors emerged that STY was one of the targets of the South Korean Football Federation (KFA) to take over as coach of the Korean national team because the coach from Ginseng Country had not yet signed his contract extension to coach the Indonesian national team.
