KRC Genk Ends Season with Disappointing Defeat Against KAA Gent and Misses Out on European Ticket

KRC Genk played the last match of the Jupiler Pro League against KAA Gent on Sunday afternoon. The Limburgers ended their season with a 0-1 defeat that was very difficult.

KRC Genk made a lot of mistakes this season, often at the wrong moments. As if all the setbacks of the past year were not enough, Genk has now also missed out on a European ticket.

This was not entirely unexpected for Jacky Mathijssen. “This loss will undoubtedly hit Genk hard. It is not very strange, because in the last six games, for Ghent, Racing lost five times,” he said at Het Belang van Limburg.

“The positivism was therefore more likely to be found among the Buffaloes, who were in a better flow in terms of results. Although they of course faced opponents of a different caliber in the Europe Play-offs.”

There will be a lot of movement on the transfer market at Genk this summer. According to Mathijssen, missing European football could still have consequences for attracting new players.

“I don’t know whether the fact that Genk does not play in Europe can make a difference in the minds of some impending incoming transfers. The fact is that, if you are, say, Club Brugge and have been playing in Europe for thirty years, you are stronger in the market to bring in certain top players. It is no different for KRC. If a certain target has really touched on the item of European play, Genk can shake it off,” he concludes.
